Mining exploration company District Metals reports positive preliminary results from a collaboration with Spotlight-listed Xoma regarding water treatment at the Viken project in Jämtland.Tests of Xoma’s microalgae-based treatment technology showed, according to the company, significant reductions in metal concentrations in water affected by leaching from alum shale. With a double dose of microalgae, drinking water limits were achieved after one treatment step for, among other things, nickel and uranium. The companies now plan further tests, including simulations of continuous treatment systems and analyses of different water chemistries.District Metals CEO Garrett Ainsworth states that the results show potential for a scalable and environmentally sustainable solution for water treatment at the Viken deposit. Environmental management is important in the mining industry. No financial details are provided regarding the project.
