Hospital Meixoeiro do Vigo in Spain, has treated its first prostate cancer patient using Augmented Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (ASBRT) with support of the Raypilot System®. The treatment follows the installation of the system and training of the clinical team, expanding access to advanced radiotherapy techniques in the region.
Following the signing of a rental agreement with the hospital, installation of the system and staff training were completed earlier this year and on September 14, the clinical team initiated its first patient treatment, marking the start of a new chapter in precision radiotherapy at the hospital.
Growing Adoption Across Spain
The implementation of the Raypilot System at Hospital Meixoeiro do Vigo adds to a growing number of Spanish hospitals introducing real-time prostate tracking as part of a modern radiotherapy workflow. The hospital joins other centers across the country that have adopted the technology for prostate cancer treatment and becomes the sixth Spanish customer to implement the Raypilot System in the country.
Dr. Patricia Willisch, Head of Radiation Oncology at the hospital, commented:
"Compared with previous approaches, the process is much easier for the patient. The technique involves placing a minimally invasive transperineal device that enables treatment with very small margins and allows patients to receive treatment on an outpatient basis over just a few days."
Real-Time Tracking Improves Treatment Confidence
From a medical physics perspective, the implementation of Raypilot integrates smoothly into existing radiotherapy workflows while providing a significant advantage through continuous prostate motion monitoring.
Benito Andrade, Medical Physicist at Hospital Meixoeiro, Vigo, Spain, said:
"From a physics perspective, the workflow is very similar to other image-guided radiotherapy techniques. Treatment planning, dose constraints and patient setup remain largely unchanged. The key difference is the ability to continuously track the prostate throughout treatment."
Dr. Willisch added:
"With this system, we always know the position of the prostate during treatment. If movement occurs, treatment can be paused and resumed once the prostate returns to the intended position. This continuous monitoring allows us to maintain very small treatment margins while ensuring accurate dose delivery. It provides a high level of confidence for both clinicians and patients and is a effective solution for treatment management and delivery."
Advancing Modern Radiation Therapy
Micropos Medical continues its efforts to increase awareness of modern radiation therapy as an effective, precise and patient-friendly treatment option for prostate cancer.
Strong clinical evidence supports the use of advanced radiotherapy techniques to achieve good treatment outcomes while minimizing the risk of side effects and reducing the treatment burden for patients. The collaboration with Hospital do Meixoeiro de Vigo strengthens access to modern treatment approaches in the region and supports the broader ambition of making accurate and high-precision radiotherapy available to more prostate cancer patients.
